Profile

Why Organized Crime?:
A childhood interest in organized crime became a full-time obsession in the 1990s. I have managed The American Mafia website ( http://www.onewal.com ) since September 2002. I look at the role of ODP editor as an opportunity to further educate myself on the subject of organized crime, to expand and improve the online collection of organized crime resources and to help guide the curious to the information they seek.

Personal:
I was raised in the Bronx, NY, until about age 12, when our family moved to western Connecticut. I have held a number of reporting/editing jobs with newspapers, magazines and web publishers. My wife and I were married in 1991. Our family has grown to include (at the moment) three elementary-school-age children, two dogs (Golden Retriever and a Black Lab), a Palomino horse, a cat and a Red-Bellied Parrot. (I felt compelled to kill off most of the houseplants - too many living things sharing my space!)

Education:
I have a Bachelor's Degree in History and Journalism. I'm told I acquired the degree the hard way. Just a class or two from meeting the graduation requirements at Western Connecticut State University, I became sidetracked by a job in community journalism. I didn't get back to school for most of the next two decades. Then, in a semester of distance learning classes through Charter Oak State College, I managed to finish up. I am a self-taught web publisher.

Hobbies:
Reading, writing, music (soprano sax, clarinet and flute), playing with the kids, watching sports (football, baseball, hockey), cooking, chess, stamp collecting.
