The Open Directory Project and I share the same birthday, although mine came 18 years before the ODP's. I was fortunate enough to have an early impact on the taxonomy of several large hierarchies. The huge categories which have grown from that early groundwork are now the most comprehensive and best organized directories for those topics. Not only are those hierarchies now used by some of the most popular portals, but they're also free for anyone to utilize. I find that quite amazing.
