Profile

Merle Harton, Jr., is a Quaker Christian writer and educator.

His nonfiction publications include works for historical and technical book and monograph audiences, in addition to scholarly essays and critical trade book and software reviews. He is author of The Man Who Rowed Lake Pontchartrain and Other Stories (New York, 2004) and co-author of the historical study Signor Faranta's Iron Theatre (New Orleans, 1982). His shorter nonfiction has appeared in BookScapes, Computer Shopper, The Eighteenth Century: A Current Bibliography, inCider Magazine, Inside Technology Training, Orlando Sentinel, Philosophical Quarterly, the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Tulane Medicine, and elsewhere. His experimental fiction has appeared in little press publications such as Back Porch, Paper Dance News, Satire, and 69 Flavors of Paranoia.

He received his baccalaureate degree in religious studies from the University of South Florida and both his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in philosophy from McMaster University (Hamilton, Canada). His registry can be found in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. He is an avid surfer, weight trainer, and a 2nd-degree black belt in Taekwondo.

Merle is a single father (and grandfather) who divides his time between Louisiana, New York, and his home in Florida. He teaches philosophy at Edward Waters College, a private historically black college affliated with the AME Church, in downtown Jacksonville, Florida.
