Profile
I think you are here trying to find out a little about me and why I'm a volunteer editor on the Open Directory. I'd rather not give too many details about myself but I am a computer programmer / web developer with a little time on my hands to surf the web and edit some categories. You could become a volunteer editor as well and begin an interesting past time. You'll learn a lot about subjects and give you another reason to surf the web. You may not realize this, but the edits made on the Open Directory (www.dmoz.org) show up on thousands of other web sites that copy the links for display on their website. The Open Directory freely provides the links.
The directory is searchable on web sites such as Google and AlltheWeb, and results appear on keyword searches. Many of the directory listings appear at the top of the searches. Open Directory results are guaranteed a personalized human edit to verify a web sites content and appropriate subject matter. As an editor, you help police the web; making it harder for spammers to flood the search engines with corrupted information, bad information or no information with their gateway pages, affiliate link web sites and links to unrelated information.
You might be interested in applying as an editor for a sports celebrity, or movie star, or perhaps you have a passion for ducks, cars, a specific movie, a favorite TV show, accounting, math, science or Dachshund weiner dog racing. Apply to be an editor to a category and start creating links for yourself and others to find. Impress your friends with the trivia and knowledge you've learned in the process.
Here is how to begin: Find a category which interests you, preferably one that says there are no editors. When you submit your request, be sure and fill in ALL the fields required with example web sites you would add to the category and how you would list them. Do a search on the directory for example listings similar and try and get the wording similar. Once the request has been made and you are notified you are editor of that category, start filling in the category with other useful links. Read the instructions for new editors which you'll see as an editor, and eventually you'll be able to edit other interesting categories as you have time. Really, you can edit for a few minutes a month or you can spend hours if you like. Whatever time and interest allows you. Once you are an editor, you can even create new categories that don't exist yet. Just fill up a temporary category in your editor bookmarks and request the new category be moved into the directory. So, if you're a big fan of "Attack of the Crab Monsters" and the category doesn't already exist, that is the way to do it. (I've already created that category in that way, and others too.) http://dmoz.org/Arts/Movies/Titles/A/Attack_Of_The_Crab_Monsters/
Keep smiling!
A DISCLAIMERI am an editor with the Open Directory Project (ODP) at www.dmoz.org -- I am in no way affiliated with the many other web sites which freely use the ODP directory data on their own sites.
