World from A-Z

Chi-s MozzieDuring the last few months, World/Chinese Simplified editors celebrated that we have reached 20,000 sites, and we believe it's growing and growing. The editors in Shopping are working hard to take care of altlangs, @links and relcats after the long-discussed reorganizations, so now the category is very close to the English category. Thanks to morningsun and amoyer. Meanwhile, a number of industrious and creative editors including damsel, sunwell, liuyuehong, xiaoma, sinu, and tangyp are helping to clean up greens, develop and build many new categories. The next few months should continue to be busy for the editors, as more and more newbies join and begin to bring new fresh ideas to

Chinese Simplified. Reorganizations in Health/Conditions_and_Diseases and Society/People are currently being discussed.

Chi-t MozzieCongratulations to griffinn, the first World/Chinese Traditional CatMod! And thanks to all the Chinese Traditional editors and gti96 Wink for contributing to a category which has easily exceeded 10,000 sites! The editors are now looking forward to crossing the 20,000 mark this year. The biggest improvements in the Regional category has been the development of the Regional/Asia/Taiwan and Regional/Asia/Hong_Kong category. Editors have worked hard to create sub-categories, descriptions, and category charters, resulting in much improved and appreciated categories led by taipaz and griffinn. (florawilberforce)

Recent news from World/Dansk:

You can find the report of the World/Deutsch team below.

Francophonie MozWorld/Français:

In spring, the French speaking editors launched a grand nettoyage de printemps (big Spring cleaning).

More moving and painting powers for World/Français: new cateditalls W/F remi and chokk and editall/catmvs alfy and sdvan reinforce the cateditall+ team.

On the Dmoz blog, the editors regularly publish the most recent categories or those in relation with what's going on on the French speaking web. And every month, the figures of the evolution of ODP's French speaking branch show its constant progression.

Please find below a detailed presentation of activities in World/Español!

Thanks to technical staff, right-to-left forums have been created for the World/Arabic and World/Hebrew teams.

The youngest World category is World/Kazakh, published in June. Congrats to toplevel editor nejron!

Sicilia MozWorld/Sicilianu was published in February. Congrats to toplevel editors fransis, geromarsala and rosario!

During the last months World/Türkçe managed to pass the 20.000 listings mark twice, thanks to Robozilla for her efforts
Most of the editing time spent on category reorganizations and new builds. Especially the editors of Bilgisayar (Computer) and Ekonomi ve Is Dünyasi (Business) are working continuously to create well-organized and well-linked categories. While toplevel Bilgisayar editor maxcoder leads most of the discussions for this branch, editor askeles decided to be a protagonist of the organization for subcategories of Ekonomi ve Is Dünyasi after working as a consistent greenbuster of this branch. Thanks to the dedication of all participating editors, these two branches are more shiny then ever.

A big editing project named "Bahar Avi" (Spring Hunt) started last month. Its aim is to re-review all listed sites of Ekonomi ve Is Dünyasi to improve the quality of listing, and to bring the titles and descriptions up to the standard of today´s ODP guidelines. Also, a considerable number of sites listed in this branch qualify for a second listing in the appropriate Bölgesel (Regional) categories of World/Türkçe. In the project, we will check the sites listed in Ekonomi ve Is Dünyasi branch and if possible double them to Regional. Editor cyilmaz, who was the winner of "Best New World/Türkçe Editor" award in the Spring 2006 Mozzies, is performing well as a cross-branch editor and makes respectable contributions to the project.

In the following weeks we are planning to focus on Egitim (Education) branch, and fix ontological errors in relation to Kaynaklar (Reference) and this branch.

World/Deutsch

(German Translation)

wd-langenscheidtActivities in World/Deutsch were mainly focused on quality improvement activities. Corresponding threads and postings can be found in many branches. This time redirects and common typos were on the agenda. Thanks go to tschild for providing huge lists to help with this tiresome work.

But not only links and descriptions were improved, the structure was looked at as well. In addition to the discussions about scope and naming of categories many new topics needed a place in the structure.

With so many concurrent discussions, some get lost or don't get finished due to lack of responses. You can help to bring them to a happy end by sharing what you know - even if you are not expert! Humans do it better!

Numerous nominations for "Best New World/Deutsch editor" show that we currently have many enthusiastic and promising new editors which is important for the growth of our categories. We are also very fortunate to have plenty mentors (whether they call themselves mentor or not) who help not only our new editors. Thank you so much for your help and patience! (rentier)

With 29,000 sites Freizeit (Recreation) is the 5th largest category in World/Deutsch. Of 125 current editors 22 joined within the last six month. The number of unreviewed is now less than 10,000.

commodore, who is top level editor since October, helped considerably to reduce them. tibetanterrier looks after editors and sites in World/Deutsch/Freizeit/Haustiere/Hunde (Dogs) which is now the largest subcat of Freizeit.

Now we target 30,000 and some improvements to the structure. I'm very positive that we'll manage that. (osiria)

The Gesundheit (Health) team has planned a lot of improvements, some of which are already in progress. The most important projects are

For Psyche (Mental Health) we try to restructure by using a new template closer to the English directory. At the same time we need to find a way to list therapists in a logical structure despite different laws and job titles in the various German speaking countries.

Reorganisation in Ernährung (Nutrition) is more complex and will therefore take some more time to finish. The subcat which contained sites about diets, fasting and starvation is now split into diets and fasting. Also a new category Gewichtsreduktion (Weight Loss) was created. It's difficult to separate sites which focus on reduction of weight from diets for health reasons. The complexity in structure results from those sites for diseases which require certain diets. Most pages contain information about the disease (e.g. Lactose Intolerance) and also about dietry options. We still need to find a solution to enable users to find the information they are looking for in the easiest possible way.

I'm glad to have a small, very enthusiastic team with which I can take on those challenges. There's a lot to do and if there are others who don't fear large projects they are welcome to join us. Suitable categories can be found in Test/Help_Wanted/World/Deutsch/Gesundheit/ (hinni)

In the last few month many editors lost... uhm set their heart on the Kids and Teens directory Heart In October 2005 we had 1230 sites, now there are more than 2300. This is an enormous growth! The major part benefited the Pfadfinder-Sites (Scouting) which were copied from the classic ODP but then reviewed and marked with age tags. Thanks go to commodore and poiin2000 for that.
Also some smaller categories were created like Schießsport (Shooting), Krankheiten und Beschwerden (Conditions and Diseases) and Kindesmissbrauch (Child abuse).
With http://kidmoz.de we now have an entry point to the German speaking part of K&T which fits younger people. (benjiwiebe)

There should be much more to write about Spiele (Games). However, we miss active and experienced editors. Despite one larger clean up in the Rollenspiele (Roleplaying) category there is not much to say except: Go on! Play, editors! (And then edit the corresponding cat) (teonas).

Humans do it better!

(teonas)

World/Español

Rae-dmoz-mozi(Click here to read the Spanish version of this article)

World/Español is a dynamic branch that knows it has a lot to offer to its end-users and to all the ODP community. In this last year it had a steady growth of 11% which has taken it to over 178,000 listed sites. Smile

Quality and Teamwork

345 editors of World/Español form the active part of a great community, doing their utmost towards a common objective, with over 60% of us contributing, at least, on a monthly basis. We all help to elaborate most of what is offered to our Spanish speaking public.

The Comité de bienvenida (Welcome Committee) and the Boletín Mensual (Monthly Newsletter) are examples of this type of work.

Welcome Committee, Guiding Editors and Mentors' Assignment

We have all been beginners and have felt overwhelmed by the amount of information we have had to deal with, once the editors' application has been accepted. One begins to feel a mixed sensation of astonishment and anxiety, and begins to have strange ideas, sort of like "What the hell am I doing here"!

With the idea of minimizing the impact on the new editor, since early 2005 we started up the Comité de bienvenida (Welcome Committee). Its tasks are: receive the new editors, assist them in their integration to the community, register their progress, and help out on the improvement of their editing work.

To make this reception even more personal, as from some time ago, each new editor has, since the very beginning a designated Guiding Editor who becomes the first reference point with the directory and is responsible of following up the first edits. After this period of assimilation, of about one month, editors who demonstrated commitment and interest can request a Mentor. All this is possible thanks to the participation of voluntary Guiding Editors and Mentors, who are assigned according to preferences and/or shifts.

Boletín Mensual (Monthly Newsletter), an achievement sustained in time

As we know that not all the editors regularly enter the forums, we try to keep them informed by means of our Monthly Newsletter. This e-mail which is issued at the beginning of the month since October 2003 - therefore, it has 32 issues - is written by the editors and contains an update on projects, ideas, changes, promotions, statistics and even jokes and a lot of humor. To access all the issues click Boletines.

Major Projects

The World/Español branch is committed to the continuous improvement of its architecture and navigation. That's the reason why proposals of different magnitude are constantly presented, analyzed and approved. Among the outstanding finished or advanced projects we mention the following:

a. Change of Structure from Países (Countries) to Regional: This was probably the most relevant of our recent projects. The first level of geographical subcategorization (Regional) was missing in World/Español as this level had been called Países instead of Regional. The result was that at World/Español/Países we had three areas:

  • An alphabar for all countries
  • The countries directly listed "above the line" Ill
  • List of the continents "below the line"

In the recent reorg we have replaced World/Español/Países by World/Español/Regional. Now the Directory has a homogeneous structure and the users don't have to ask themselves why we had such a strange structure, with continents placed below countries. oops

To illustrate the change and to notice the improvement, there's nothing better than see a file of the previous structure and compare with the present structure. Smile

b. Design of the Plantillas (Regional Templates) in Spanish: The importance of this project is based on the benefits both to users and editors. Glasses

The Regional category contains 67% of the total of listed sites in World/Español. Given its breadth, it is very important to have a well defined structure and to foresee a possible subcategorization, which can solve the needs of future growth in a comprehensive and homogeneous way, regardless of the geographical area of application.

We get this result through the Plantillas (Regional Templates) in Spanish, based on the Regional Templates in English, which allow us to put up a simple and flexible structure, adaptable to each area, but with identical features and appearances.

We also try to find names for the categories which can be fully understood and accepted in all parts of the Spanish speaking world. In the selection of the best names for categories it's important to point out the existence of the Términos recomendados (Preferred terms), whose purpose is to help editors choose the most adequate words, when a subcategory is created.

Work from the last months has led to significant progress in the Templates of Economía y negocios (Business and Economics) and of Educación (Education).

c. Translation of the Official Documentation, Glossary, and Interface: In progress, and a high level of activity. Its objective is to translate as many documents as possible from English to Spanish taking into account the priorities of the different pieces of information. Among the documents already processed are significant parts of the Editing Guidelines (including Adults, Kids and Teens and Regional), Resources for editors, About ODP and Help. We have already translated about 35 new documents.

We are also working on the translation of the Glossary and Interface.

Final Message

We wished to share with the ODP community the objectives, activities, results and expectations of World/Español and its editing team.

As we think that the diversity of languages is one of the biggest values of our Directory, and not a barrier, we have approached you with the aim that you get to know us better. We hope to have achieved our goal.
