Adult

It's been a busy few months in the Adult tree. Over the last few years Adult editors have had to participate in large-scale clean-ups as the adult industry has changed to fit around new laws and company closures. This time, following the introduction of new United States regulation, many adult sites have closed down, removed their content or redirected their traffic. As usual our hard-working Adult editors have pulled together to clean up our little bit of the directory.

With things changing as quickly as they do in Adult, we really would like to see more editors active in the Adult area. If you wouldn't mind helping out in a constantly changing environment we would be more than happy to see you!

Arts

Arts has seen steady growth over the past few months thanks to the continuing red busting project (big thanks to everyone who has/is participating) and the help of editors working in the branch. Before the last robozilla run Arts passed 300,000 listings and is now slowly moving toward breaking that mark again. We now have two new cateditalls kevdav and sarahkinley, congratulations to both of them.

We have several on going projects in the branch:

New categories have been appearing in the branch thanks to several editors including artisands, arubin and bekahm. As always there is room for continued growth, there are still many films, television shows, authors, actors, bands and artists who don't yet have a specific category or have categories that need development. If you see a movie or have a favorite actor or band, why not consider building a category for them in bookmarks or consider applying to edit the current categories to help build them up.

Business

For the past few months, the work in Business has centered on the re-org of many of the subcategories and clearing the reds and update requests. What began a year ago with Home and Garden and Food and Related Products and has spread to Agriculture and Forestry and Fire and Security. Before the current Robozilla run, Business was actually update and red free!
A tremendous effort by all of the editors made this possible! Thank-you!!

We have added over 60 new editors in the past 3 months. Their enthusiasm, hard work, and dedication is helping to make Business the premier category of the ODP. While it is difficult to single out just one new editor, I would like to mention "Best New Business Editor" Mozzie winner - artofmobile (Chris). Right after joining in March 2005, Chris signed up for Mozzie's Mentors. Since that time, he has contributed much effort in straightening out, and adding sites to the categories of Telecommunications and Wireless Data.

There are plenty of ongoing projects and discussions in the forums to keep us all busy. While there are no major re-orgs on the horizon, we will continue to clean up other identified ontology issues and add quality sites.  GO TEAM BIZ!!

Computers

The Computers tree often seems fairly quiet if you only look in the forums, but things have been happening in the background. Two long standing entries on the help wanted list Computers/Data_Formats/Conversion and Computers/Security/Consultants are now green free and healthy after the respective (and extensive) efforts of dmclean and callimachus. Merzliakov won the Best Computers editor award, previously a king of the stealth editors, he has been beavering away in the innards of Computers/Programming for years and the recognition is well deserved.

Editor mozillaman has continued his work on all things open source and dinosaur related, building up the Firefox categories and updating the Mozilla suite categories for the Seamonkey rebranding.

There has also been a wireless theme running, probably as a result of the world's new found obsession with wireless hardware of all types. A new Symbian category was added to hold both the legacy Psion (EPOC) stuff as well as sites relating to new fangled Symbian OS mobile phones. Editor artofmobile has continued racking up edits in Wireless data, although recently I notice he has been sneaking in a lot of work in Business (albeit in still on a wireless theme) - tsk! And a new editor petgraveyard has been tidying up the wireless network security category.

I'd also like to congratulate our new top level Computers editor stephenpace who has put in loads of time in the database and consulting categories over the years.

Finally - I'd like to thank all of those editors in Computers I've not had time to mention here, you are all very much appreciated. It can sometimes seem a thankless task trying to get things done in Computers, often because of the lack of other editors comfortable commenting on very technical areas, thank you for your perseverance.

Games

Super mozzilaExpansion is the theme for this ontology beat as Games has recently experiences significant growth! Even as reds appear all over the directory, Games has continued to grow, being the first tree over the course of several Robozilla runs to be clear of reds. New categories for new games are created daily, filled with everything from fan pages to reviews, allowing our end-users a glimpse at every game as a whole from resources around the world.

Notably, lufiaguy and wrathchild have been expanding the Video_Games category rapidly while spoofer25 busts through Video_Games/Shooter with impressive devotion. Enarra and jtaylorj are busy keeping the tree tidy and always make sure catmv requests are handled in a timely manner. As always, Online/MUDs is a hot area with several new editors continuing to provide innovative ideas about taxonomy. Gambling, though always a trouble spot, is running well. As always, editors new and old are encouraged to work with the team. Excellent job Team Games!

Recreation

Early this year the reorganization of subcategories in Outdoors/Equipment and Outdoors/Metal Detecting was completed, as manufacturing sites were moved to Business/Consumer Goods and Services/Sporting Goods. In other areas, editors continue to send new listings to more appropriate subcategories of Shopping.

Nevertheless, Recreation has grown to 120,000 listings, with over 60,000 sites still unreviewed. Leading categories, with a growth rate of 25% or higher, are Whips; Roads and Highways; and Trains and Railroads, edited respectively by spongepants, mapsax and choppa. The largest subcategory, Pets, has over 30,000 sites and 109 editors. Altogether, there are 423 editors in thirty categories. Two categories need editors, and are waiting for adoption. There are on-going discussions about the reorganization of and general issues in the Humor, Collecting, Motorcycles, Travel, and Pets/Fish and Aquaria categories. Cherel and bengle were granted spots at the top level in July.

Reference

wjcampbe has been keeping us busy trying to figure out the difference between the International Schools and International Baccalaureate categories. After much discussion, I can honestly say that I have no idea. Check out the thread and enlighten us if you can.

Someone has finally proposed that the Infoplease.com category be disbanded. sole gets a :-) for the day. What will we do without those one or two sentence articles? (Sarcasm? What's that?) Read about it here.

And I bet you thought I forgot about vonjobi and his excellent work cleaning up the Filipino Colleges and Universities category. It's looking good. The excitement can be found in the forum, of course. The wild editors were given some chocolate to settle down, which attracted lisagirl, until she realized that it was only for the Reference geeks... I mean, really cool people. japrian has also been a busy bee lately. The Illinois State University category has grown by leaps and bounds since she was accepted. Now if only I could convince her to apply for another category. That goes for the rest of you out there too. Reference/Education/Colleges_and_Universities needs your help. Lots of categories to choose from, including your alma mater. Or maybe you wanted to go to Oxford or Harvard. Now you can! (Or at least pretend to.)

Diploma mills have been corralled by lorenzen. The category ended up in Society, but is highly related to the evil spam pit known as Reference/Education/Products_and_Services/Academic_Papers. In an unrelated story, lorenzen has informed us he now has doctorates in Physics, Economics, and Badminton.

The big green editor known as hulkster received editing privileges in Reference/Maps. (Although we think that has more to do with mcowley being afraid to deny the request on account of being SMASHED!) Reference/World_Records seems like a category the Hulk would know more about than those puny human maps.

Regional

One of the major success stories of the year so far is the amazing work being undertaken in Regional/Africa. In February Regional/Africa/Tunisia was the focus for a catbust led by andysands resulting in a total of 487 new sites added to the Regional and World Tunisian categories. A great effort by all concerned.

The Africa Adopt-a-Category project, inspired by the G8 conference and led by glippitt, has captured the attention and participation of many editors from all branches of the directory and the category picked up the award for "Most Improved Category or Reorganization" in the Summer 2005 Mozzies. See the thread Africa Adopt-a-Category (G8, Live8, Bono and Make Poverty History) for detailed statistics of how the project is progressing. There are still categories up for adoption that are in need of a little TLC and all contributions are welcomed.

The directory wide Team Editing Project - Round 2, Errors has had a great response from Regional editors. The recent Robozilla run, which saw the number of errors more than triple in our branch, seems to have further fueled our determination to bust those reds. At the time of writing, over 15,000 errors have been processed in Regional over a four month period. Fantastic work!

Editors continue to work hard building up some of the smaller Regional localities. The "Florida Strive For 5 Challenge" and the UK "Build a Village Challenge" continue to be successful projects in their area. There are still many underdeveloped countries which need building out though, some having over 100% unreviewed, so the potential for growth is most definitely there. Check out the Countries Gauntlets to see the areas most in need of help. If there are editors out there who fancy a change of scenery and a "virtual vacation" please consider taking on a locality in a country that interests you.

Science

Science editors are silently but steady improving specialized subfields of science. A major topic in the Science forum was establishing "preferred terms", which was guided by orlady.

In the meantime, the Agriculture team of science editors changed Instruments_and_Supplies back to Products_and_Services in order to better accommodate the Seed_Testing subcategory, with Consultants moved to the new Products_and_Services category. Some major category improvements where made, like Fuel_Cells category thanks to plantrob, Genetics thanks to sutty and Urban planning thanks to eurekalott. Editor arubin has brought some fresh ideas into the GPS reorganization, and lissa into Space Technology and Space Missions. And thanks to angela45, as soon as the adaptation of the Manufacturing Technology category is finished, we are expecting CatBusters to help us to clean some greens.

And partly due his involvement in Science ontology development, plantrob was promoted into Editall/Catmv. Congrats!

Society

A Few Notable New Cats of 2005

Where in the world do you put a cat for an island that is claimed by two countries, on two different continents? In Society of course! After discussion in Regional to which Society editors were invited, a cat for Hans Island was created in Society: Issues: Territorial Disputes. Forgiveness is a simple and important topic, but it took carolevhoof to think of creating a cat for it, and then our team quite a bit of discussion for us to figure out where to put it.

A few other notable new cats: London Bombings, Torso Murderer, and International Fellowship of Evangelical Students which quickly grew from one site to nearly 300 when Team Christianity decided to do a little restructuring. People: Generations and Age Groups was created and we separated the midlife and Baby Boomer cats.

Ongoing Reorgs, Clean Ups, and Team Projects

rzan has been leading organization in Genealogy. Divination is undergoing some changes under the leadership of bekahm. There is discussion about Gangs our World War II cat, and Student_Government.

Drop in and give us your input if you have an interest in any of these areas!

 World

In the incubator: newborn and recently published Test cats

Baby mozillaEditor inmean joined us to take care of Test/World/Khmer. The World/Italiano team initiated the creation of Test/World/Sicilianu , with toplevel editors fransis, geromarsala and rosario. Sicilian is spoken mainly in Sicily, dialects of Sicilian are also spoken in Southern Calabria and Puglia. World/Gujarati went public some days ago. Congratulations to mgalib, kartic and chang.

Special thanks to nevidonas for helping Test/World editors to plan the new directories and setting up many new Test categories for editorless languages.

Around the World from A to Z

World/Arabic, led by the new toplevel editors drhus and milad, is growing and gaining speed. The most important parts of the interface have been translated to make submitting sites and editing easier for non-English speaking surfers. Editors abdou, drhus, gharbeia and milad participated in the Africa - Adopt-a-category initiative.

Chinese mozillaWorld/Chinese Simplified: Several editors joined forces to improve the category structure in Business. In Transportation and Logistics morningsun created many new subcategories including Maritime and Aviation, and cleaned up large amounts of reds and greens. Business/Transportation and Logistics/Automotive was renamed and moved to Business/Automotive. Many editors showed interest and participated in the related forum discussion. Agriculture and Forestry has been reorganized, the reorg was led by a promising newbie editor, sinu. And thanks to morningsun again for reducing the reds and greens in Computers/Internet. Regional/Asia/China leader huichang brought up some interesting ontological problems. Also thanks to yklaw, heynickal and iamfisher for giving us an overview on editing in Regional including listing sites in the Regional branch, creating subcategories, the difference between @link and related category etc. (the related discussion is here) (florawilberforce)

World/Cesky editors obtained permission to use the domain dmoz.cz from the current owner. Now they are planning how to fill it: with submission guidelines and other official documents, additional help texts, a forum and a ODP mirror.

World/Dansk: An increased number of Danish sites are using ODP-data. The reason for this is probably that World/Dansk has reached 56.000+ sites, which is a very useful size for a small country with a population of 5.4 million people.

A new Danish law will result in major changes in the public structure. 275 kommuner (local authorities) will be merged into 98 kommuner when we hit January 1st 2007. This will call for major changes in World/Dansk/Regional and in Regional/Europe/Denmark. (jensarentoft)

The World/Deutsch editors have started calculations when they will take the 500.000 mark - a thread to place bets will hopefully start soon! Please find a detailed report on events of the last half year in English and German below.

francophonie mozzieWorld/Français: Although the weather is currently very fine at the beach, not all ODP editors are on holiday. They are even hyperactive, see the stats. 38 editors posted their opinion about the future of dmoz. Their posts were translated into English to make the task of the analysts more easy. This is excellent news because French-speaking editors have often said in the past that they wished their viewpoint be taken into account.

Morale is again quite high after the awards gained during the last round of Mozzies. Thanks to all editors who visited those cats and made an informed vote.

Trendy editing tools among World/Français editors are at the moment Apollo and GooEdit. We are striving to contain the flux of unrevs, while GooEdit allows us to improve quality control. If you wish to know what the most frequent words in French descriptions are, please visit Le grand jeu de l´été. (cmic & tuisp)

World/Galego ´s cateditall zrum has been promoted catmod, both for World/Galego and World/Espanol.

World/Italiano is the surprising winner of the Espano-Franco-Italiano race for the position of second-biggest World directory. One of the reasons for the teams´ success is certainly their welcoming and mentoring system, which helps newbies to find their way into the team easily (find more info about it here).

italyAt the moment, the editors are working on a variety of ideas to promote ODP: A tool to set up surveys for newbies, editors, searchers and submitters, programmed by emmeffe, was recently presented in English in the General forum. Now a whole editor-maintained ODP "portalino" is under construction.

To improve editors skills and keep them up-to-date every month the World/Italiano team publishes its Newsletter. It contains a list of all major changes and discussions in all W/It forums, news, interviews and editing tips and tricks. edodpba has written and monthly update a full newsletter index , divided by topics and words. Last but not least these are a list of some documents and ideas created and published by the World/Italiano team:

A list of World/Italiano projects is available at DmozWiki. (weppos)

World/Norsk has a new meta, hansfn, and lost an old meta, hildea, by time-out. Many editors working only in their special field of interest. (hansfn)

World/Turkce: Several reorgs have been realized, led by new toplevel editor erkin and cateditall sahinler. erkin is currently working on an updated version of the Turkish-language guidelines translation.

World/Deutsch

In the last few month World/Deutsch saw controversial discussions, the loss of some senior and much liked editors who decided to take a break or leave ODP, and on the other hand a great meet up in Esslingen and some promising new editors.

Special thanks also go to the DMOZ-Blog-Team (find more about it here). Unfortunately the fun of reading the blog is limited to those understanding German, but the mixture of witty, critical and informative articles made me often wonder, smile and laugh. (rentier)

Computer has taken the 17.000 mark, altough some webdesigners were lost to Regional. Reorgs of Webdesign/Promotion, Content Management and Webhosting are in progress - volunteers welcome! Special thanks go to geierf for cleaning up greens in Webdesign and to all the other editors who make this project work. (sparrk)

Gesellschaft (Society) is clearly over 30,000 sites, the biggest areas beeing Persönliche Homepages (Personal homepages) and Religion und Spiritualität (Religion and Spirituality). The most emotional discussion is certainly the one looking for a home for "Coaching". hghuebscher und ikw collected and structered many sites for this topic which focus not on business but ordinary people. One of the options is Society and the other Health. Both solutions have their pros and cons... grizzlies und kh80 helped with Recht (Law) and Krieg und Frieden (Warfare and Conflict) has grown with the help of carab.

The German Kids and Teens part is growing...slowly but steadily. Many small categories wait for editors with a heart for children. The newly built category Tiere (Animals) for example only consists of five sites so far. Also Sport und Hobby (Sports and Hobbies) have a lot new subcategories which could do with a bit of help. (benjiwiebe)

120 editors achieved 62% growth from autumn 2003 on, end of 2004 broke the 40,000 sites mark. Now there are more than 43.000 sites in Kultur (Arts). grhacker managed to restructure Tanz- und Unterhaltungsmusik while at the same time adding a lot of sites. Fortunately he earned some recognition for the great job he had done in the editor awards. After long discussions Fotografie (Photography) was reorganized as well. It now resembles the structure in Top more and also offers more categories for the sites than before. One major task is to improve the quality of structure and content. Starting with Autoren und Autorinnen (Authors) this task will go on for some more time. By the way, there are rumors that hijacking has found a new way: not only websites are hijacked but also editors from other branches! A cautious question, a positive word or a hint of a culture-like category in the bookmarks are all that's needed... This apparently happened to bommel with Skiffle and sparrk with Rock and Schlager. But of course that's only tale telling (which would usually be listed in Mythen und Volksliteratur (Myths and Folktales)). (liszt)

Medien (News) was nearly completely restructured. Subcategories in Alternative Medien (Alternative), Radio and Fernsehen (Television) were regrouped in dependency of sponsorship. And now that the threat of moving Fernsehen (Television) and Radio to Kultur (culture) is over, editors aim at reaching 3000 sites soon. The fairly new editors rawutzel and ernie00 are helping with it. (bommel)

Activities in Online-Shops (Shopping) calmed down during the past few months. Although the 15.000 listed sites mark has been taken the greens went up just as steadily and are about to reach the 20,000. Nevertheless a few improvements to the structure have been made. Prepared by intravet and with the help of werth Pferdesport (Equestrian) has been restructred and greatly improved while javailama is busy restructuring Autos/Ersatzteile und Zubehör (Vehicles/Parts_and_Accessories/). (rafaela)

Regional is nearing the 195,000 which should be due this year. Some projects - some of them directory wide initiatives like Africa - Adopt a category - helped greatly with the growth. Many editors took the possibility to explore new areas of the directory and the world. Thanks to all of them! Another project to be mentioned is certainly the looking for new links for zero-site categories in Schweiz (Switzerland). Created long ago as placeholders the majority of them could finally be filled now. (rentier)

Sport has grown to 28.500 listed sites. Major projects were the restructuring of Pferdesport (Equestrian), Motorsport (Motorsports) and Kampfsportarten (Martial Arts). Behindertensport (Disabled) was introduced as own category. New Toplevel-Editors are karlli (Sept. 2004) und pkasch (Juli 2005). (pkasch)

Wirtschaft (Business) went through a lot of changes and enhancements. After moving Personalmanagement (Human Resources) to the public part, a clean up for Beschäftigung (Employment) was started and mainly performed by grizzlies to solve overlaps between the two categories. juv took care of changes in Pumpen (Pumps) which he presented and guided in the English as well as the German business forum. After long discussions the change which tomparis proposed last december is taking shape. Dienstleistungen für Unternehmen (Business Services) will be dissolved and and moved to different parts of the branch. So far Kommunikation (Communications), Sachverständige (Expert witnesses) and Sicherheit und Gefahrenabwehr (Fire and security) found a new home in the root of Wirtschaft. In June a new category was moved from Test to the public part. Prepared by hghuebscher this category is a useful resource for small and middle sized companies. In the same month several free floating categories for information technology were joined and grouped in their own category. The latest challenge aims at more than thousand unreviewed in Architektur (Architects) which will receive proper descritions and a new structure by daiz. Many thanks to all editors which contributed to reaching the 50.000 mark.

One of the changes in Wissen (Reference) is the reorganisation of Bibliotheken (Libraries). pborer changed some categories to the correct terminology. May saw the creation of a new category for E-Learning, which is now looked after by timfly. Last but not least, vieselmeier introduced new subcategories for certain Hochschulen (Colleges and Universities). (grizzlies)

Wissenschaft (Science) und Zuhause (Home) are currently a bit orphaned - although they have much to offer. A lot of interesting categories are still hiding there! piology did a great job with Internetrecht (Internet Law), and Zuhause features categories like Verbraucherinformationen (Consumer Information) and Persönliche Finanzen (Personal Finance). (rentier, tomparis)

- Das World/Deutsch Team (Coordination: rentier)

In Kids and Teens/International/Deutsch geht es langsam vorwärts.
