1   Q: My publisher's site is listed. I'm an author, why can't I get my site listed?

A: Individual authors can't get a site listed just by buying a domain name and putting up a link to their publisher.

To get listed separately, authors have to provide unique and substantial content on their own site, like an extended 'About the Author' section, an account of the history of their book(s), or free samples.

Then, if a site wants to be considered a "Shopping" site, the Author's site should should link directly from their description of a book to a book's check out page at the publisher. Do not link to the publisher's main page.

(You may find listings that break this rule, but they weren't added by this editor.)

2   Q: Should I submit to a Shopping category -or- to the category that matches the Subject of my digital book?

A: First, congratulations on knowing that you have to pick 'the one best category' for your site.

The right category for your site depends on 1) what you qualify for, and 2) where you think people might browse the directory to look for you.

People who search the directory might also find your listing by keywords. Of course, good editors remove keyword-stuffing and puffery from site descriptions, so be tasteful.

In the Shopping category, the clarity and security of the purchase process are reviewed as part of the site. Please see FAQ 3 for more information.

In Digital Books, it's important to have a 'legit' unique downloadable book, not one that's free to re-title and re-sell. That said, the quality of the book is _not_ what is being evaluated. This makes sense because the books are often not available for free at a Shopping site.

Free samples are read. Reviews from respectable sites are noted. But in the end, this is an evaluation of your site, not your book.

In the Subject categories, sites need to have enough free quality content in that Subject to qualify. If the site is 'just selling a downloadable book' it will be transferred by that category's editor back to this Shopping category for review.

3   Q: How do you evaluate the integrity and security of a Shopping site?

A: Even though the editors of this category are book lovers, this is a Shopping category, not a literature category.

Review the criteria for a 'Shopping Site' here:http://dmoz.org/Shopping/desc.html

But more importantly, read the Frequently Asked Questions here:http://dmoz.org/Shopping/faq.html

4   Q: Which subcategory of Digital Books should I submit to?

A: If the right subcategory is not obvious, please feel free to submit to the main category of Digital Books. This editor will review your site and pick the right subcategory for you

Some editors in other categories prefer that submitters do the most detailed categorizing possible, so check the FAQ each time. [But you, you're smart, you always read the FAQ!]

5   Q: I'm not sure this is the right category, what other categories should I consider?

A: This category is for downloadable books.
