In the early 1820s, Hartwell’s Basin, as it was called at the time, developed as a canal settlement. On the main stagecoach route connecting Rochester's
Genesee Falls and the Village of Canandaigua
, the basin played a key role. The Village of Fairport
eventually eclipsed the basin as the seat of power. Today, Bushnell's Basin is a scenic residential and business area straddling the Erie Canal.
