Gateshead, a large town and county borough on the south bank of the river Tyne is home to around 200,000 people. Its origins appear to be Roman when it was the end of the roman road at the Tyne river crossing from the south to Hadrian's Wall. This was confirmed in 2000 by the discovery of an extensive roman settlement and medieval industrial remains in the Bottle Bank area of the town. Once extensive forests covered the area and it was the hunting ground for the Prince Bishops of Durham. However over time the forests were lost to the coal industry and despite being a centre for heavy industry throughout the centuries, Gateshead was always overshadowed by its wealthier and more powerful neighbour, Newcastle. Today Gateshead still has an extensive light industry and trade area on the Team Valley and is a busy modern town. It has an internationally renowned sports stadium, the Metro Centre - largest retail complex in Europe and a reputation for supporting the Arts. The Gateshead Quay is currently under development to provide world class music, leisure and arts facilities. Gateshead includes the mainly urban areas of Central Gateshead, Felling, Dunston and Blaydon and the more rural districts of Ryton, Whickham, and Rowlands Gill in the Derwent Valley.

A city in the county of Tyne and Wear located on the north bank of the river Tyne, Newcastle upon Tyne was originally a Roman fort and river crossing. In Norman times a castle was built on the site of this fort as part of the northern defences against the Scots and a medieval walled town grew up around it. The town became an important military and commercial centre and around 1400 was made a county in its own right. Today Newcastle remains the commercial centre of the north east of England. Sunderland, situated at the mouth of the river Wear in the county of Tyne and Wear, dates back to around 680 AD when it was land on the south bank of the Wear belonging to the monastery at Monkwearmouth, which was situated on the north bank. It was so named because the land was sundered or separated from the monastery by the river. The settlements of Monkwearmouth, Bishopwearmouth and Sunderland eventually merged to form the town of Sunderland. Sunderland and its port grew in importance with the coal and shipbuilding industries and became a major industrial area in the north east. Today although the port remains active those other industries have been replaced by service and manufacturing industries and the St Peter's area of the river is the focus of much innovative redevelopment. Sunderland was elevated to city status in 1992.

Washington, a town in the North East of England, lies between the River Wear and the River Tyne. It is bounded by the A1(M) motorway and is easily reached from anywhere in the country. Settlement in the area dates back to the Middle Stone Age. Later the Romans, Anglo Saxons and Normans inhabited the region. It is famous as being the first 'Washington' in the world, and is renowned as the ancestral home of George Washington, the first President of the United States of America. The original Washington family coat of arms, 'argent, two bar and in chief three mullets gules' was adopted by George Washington's ancestor in 1183, and later formed the basis of the USA flag, the Stars and Stripes. Once a thriving coal mining area, Washington had a population of only 1190 in 1801. However, with its designation as a New Town in 1964, it is estimated that its population will eventually reach 80,000.
