This category and its subcategories is for ale and beer producers and suppliers in the UK. The independent breweries mainly produce what is called Real Ale - defined as "draft or bottled beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide". Most of the beer produced in this country in not real ale - it is pasteurised and served using carbon dioxide or electric pumps.

Independent breweries are mainly family owned since Victorian times, brewing a range of 'real ales' using traditional methods and ingredients. Many have a range of tied houses.
These are very small breweries, often attached to the only pub that sells their product. There may be other nearby outlets, or possibly a larger brewer will bottle and distribute the products.
Eight out of ten pints of beer brewed in the UK are from this small number of large brewing companies.
