This category is for hardware, software, or any information relating to audio formats. The most commonly found formats have subcategories, so please submit there if appropriate. More rare formats, or comparisons between numerous formats may be listed in this category.
This is a category for the AY-3-8910, AY-3-8912, YM2149 family chips. The AY chips were used in several different computers and consoles like Sinclair ZX Spectrum 128/+2/+3, Amstrad CPC 464/664/6128, Mattel Intellivision, BBC Micro, Atari ST, Sega Master System and probably a lot more.
This category is for listing sites explaining the MOD format.
MOD files consist of a combination of sample and pattern data. Each unique sound in a song (for example a bass drum) is stored only once, and repeatedly played.
The term comes from the Amiga program ProTracker, but has since evolved into other formats such as S3M, XM, and IT. All of those files are still called "modules" today.
This category is for listing software for MOD files - either players, or other programs used in song construction or manipulation.
This category is basically for listing sites relating to the MP3 file format.
The @linked categories are used to list sites based on sound files, directories, shopping etc. Please list related sites in the appropriate one.
This category is for sites about the MP3 file format itself or related devices/products. Please look under the appropriate @link for listing MP3 download or other sites.
Since MPEG-4 is a comprehensive multimedia standard, this category lists sites about several audio formats, all being part of MPEG-4 Audio.
"Natural" coding of sound: Advanced Audio Coding (AAC, also its MPEG-2 version), TwinVQ (aka VQF), CELP, Parametric Codecs (HVXC, HILN).
"Synthetic" coding of sound: Structured Audio Orchestra Language (SAOL) and Structured Audio Score Language (SASL), Text-To-Speech (TTS).
The container format MP4 also belongs to this category, as long as it includes audio-only tracks with *.m4a, *.m4b or *.mp4 file extension and not video or other parts of the MPEG-4 standard like 2D/3D graphics.
Due to the new developments in mobile communication the 3GPP/3GP2 standard and its audio codecs (several AMR and AAC variants) should be included here, also because their container formats *.3gp and *.3g2 are very similar to MP4, although not the same.
The description below lists all compression and file formats that are on-topic here. Related categories would be MP3 (being a valid format in the MP4 container) or the Visual and Systems parts of the MPEG-4 standard (choose the general MPEG category for now), also DivX which is often used as a label for hardware MPEG-4 video players. So please submit your site in those categories if it better fits in there.
