Q. WHAT IS URDU AND WHERE IS THIS LANGUAGE SPOKEN? A. Urdu is an important South Asian language spoken by nearly 250 million persons in India, Pakistan and other neighbouring countries. In addition, there are thousands of people of South Asian origin and others who speak Urdu and are scattered all over the Globe. Urdu is the national language of Pakistan.

Q. TELL ME MORE ABOUT URDU LANGUAGE A. The word Urdu has a Turkish origin which means 'camp'. It emerged in northern India about one thousand years ago out of a mixture of local languages and of the Persian language spoken by armies and merchants from the Persia that also included many words from Arabic and Turkish.

Urdu has a rich poetic tradition. Urdu poetry expresses the human feelings, passion of love and the beauty of nature in a very melodious and elegant manner. Urdu poetry is full of humility and selflessness. There is a vast body of Urdu literature going back some 700 years.

With many Urdu speaking natives migrating to other parts of the world, Urdu is no longer confined to the Indian subcontinent. There are Urdu societies and academic programs in many major cities around the world, and Urdu recitals (Mushaeras) are particularly popular and delightful events. While Urdu has its own script (similar to Arabic and Persian), this discussion group and many Internet Urdu homepages use Roman characters to write Urdu. This has the added advantage of making Urdu available to a number of Urdu lovers who can speak, but can't read or write Urdu script.
