Major League Soccer is the United States' Division 1 professional men's league. It began play in 1996 with ten teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew, Dallas Burn, DC United, Kansas City Wizards, Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, New York-New Jersey MetroStars, , San Jose Clash, and the Tampa Bay Mutiny. DC United beat the LA Galaxy in the first MLS Cup.

In 1998, two expansion teams were added, the Chicago Fire and the Miami Fusion.

Following disappointing attendance, the league folded the Fusion and the Mutiny after the 2001 season, returning the league to ten teams.

One of MLS's first two expansion teams (along with the Miami Fusion) in 1998, the Chicago Fire won the MLS Cup in their first season, beating DC United 2-0. They made it to the cup finals in 2000 and 2003. The Fire have also won the US Open Cup in 1998, 2000, and 2003.

A charter member of the MLS, Columbus Crew have never won the MLS Cup or made it the finals. The Crew have won the US Open Cup in 2002.

The most successful team in the short history of MLS, DC United won three of the first four MLS Cup titles in 1996, 1997, and 1999. DC United also won its fourth MLS Cup in 2004, the US Open Cup in 1996, and the CONCACAF Champions' Cup in 1998.

The Dallas Burn was one of the founding teams of MLS in 1995, and has never made it to the MLS Cup finals. The Burn did win the US Open Cup in 1997. The team was renamed FC Dallas prior to the 2005 season.

Houston Dynamo

In December 2005, the San Jose Earthquakes were sold and moved to Houston, Texas. Initially named Houston 1836, the club was renamed Houston Dynamo in March 2006.
