Figures were the technical figure of 8 and 3 patterns skated, and judged, on a patch of ice. Figures were formerly included as a compulsory component of singles competitions but were eliminated from those events in 1990. Today figures are rarely taught or performed but the term "Figure Skating" has survived and is now regarded as including free, pairs, ice dance and other styles such as synchronized or precision skating.
