Kenpo or Kempo (pronounced kempo) means fist law/method. Kenpo is comprised of many systems and it's history can be complicated to follow. It has strong ties to China, Japan, and Okinawa. Kenpo has many branches. Ed Parker's American Kenpo, Tracy Kenpo, Okinawan/Japanese Kenpo, Kenpo-Jujutsu, KaraHo Kempo, Kajukenbo, Shaolin Kenpo, and many more than can be listed here.

The one thing that most Kenpo/Kempo systems have in common is it's focus on self-defense. Kenpo is very fast and very fluid in motion.


American Kenpo

American Kenpo, also called Ed Parker's American Kenpo, was devoloped and designed by Edmund K. Parker.

American Kenpo is one of the largest Kenpo systems being taught today. Some teach the system as it was taught before Ed Parker's passing in 1990. Other's have added and modified the system. Either case, it is refered to as American Kenpo.

Kajukenbo

Please suggest only schools for Kajukenbo.

Kajukenbo was created in Hawai by a small group called the Black Belt Society. These were all martial artist with different backgrounds. They devised their own system.

The name stands for Ka(karate)ju(jujitsu/judo)ken(kenpo)bo(chinese boxing/kung fu). They decided the make Kenpo the base system for the new one.

Kosho Ryu

Kosho, meaning "Old Pine Tree" is reported to be 750 year old art, founded by a monk named Bosatsu from the Shaka Inn Temple, Mount Kinhai, Kumamoto, Kyushu, Japan.

Many of the Kosho stylists, in the USA, trace their lineage to James Mitose, who is reported to be the 21st Great GrandMaster. Also referred to an Kempo Jujutsu.

Organizations

Ryukyu and Okinawan

Suggest websites to schools teaching Ryukyu and Okinawan Kenpo/Kempo.

The Ryukyu's are a small chain of islands located between Japan and China. The largest and most famous of these islands is Okinawa. Because of their strategic location as trading center for both China and Japan, the Ryukyus were greatly influenced by both the Chinese and Japanese cultures. Ryukyu Kenpo is a system of martial arts that has roots in both; the Okinawan "TE" (HAND) system and the Chinese Kempo (FIST WAY). Thus Ryukyu Kenpo is a blend of the old Okinawan and Chinese martial arts. The uniqueness of Ryukyu Kenpo can be seen in the "hard style" training with power and emphasis on makiwara training.

Shaolin

Please submit sites for Shaolin Kempo/Kenpo following from the Fred Villari lineage or the Ralph Castro lineage.

Shaolin Kenpo/Kempo system tends more towards the Kung-Fu element and utilizes the techniques of the 5 animal Chuan Fa to a large extent. Added to some Kenpo/Kempo systems was White Tiger Chin Na techniques, as well as various Aikijujitsu projections and immobilizations.

Note that there are serveral systems that use this name. Two of which is Fred Villari from the Mitose/Chow/Cerio lineage and Ralph Castro of Mitose/Chow lineage. This category house both as well as other systems that fit the above description.

Shorinji Kempo

only sites for Shorinji Kempo/Kenpo from the Doshin So lineage.

Shorinji Kempo was established in the town Tadotsu, situated on island of Shikoku, which is the smallest of the four big islands of Japan. The founder was a man named Doshin So.

Shorinji means Shaolin and Kempos mean fist law/method which in chinese would be Chuan Fa.

Tracy's Kenpo

The Tracy brothers started with Edmund K. Parker back in the 1950's. It was around the 1960's that they splintered of into what they term Traditional Kenpo. There are many similarities between American Kenpo and Traditional Kenpo.
