Aikido is a modern, Japanese martial art that incorporates techniques and motions from Jujutsu as well as sword and spear forms.
The ideal goal is to resolve conflict, but practitioners fill the spectrum from from "very new-age spiritualistic pacifists" to "conflict is resolved when my opponent can hear nothing but the pain screaming from every broken part of his body."

Also known as Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido (Aikido with Mind and Body Coordinated). Founded by Koichi Tohei after the death of O Sensei. Among Tohei Sensei's vehicles to achieve coordination of mind and body are:- Ki Testing - Oneness Rhythm Taiso (set of movement exercises set to music that enable anyone to learn mind and body unification) - Taigi (mind and Body unification through the performance of a series of Ki-Aikido techniques) - Ki Breathing (method to develop the mind and body coordination through breathing) - and Kiatsu-ho (mssage therapy based on the principles of mind and body coordination)

Founded by Kenji Tomiki, and early student of O Sensei and of Judo founder Jigoro Kano. Tomiki Sensei believed that a "rationalization" of Aikido training, along the lines that Kano Sensei followed for Judo would make it more easily taught, particularly at the Japanese Universities. In addition, he believed that introducing an element of competition would serve to sharpen and focus the practice since it was no longer tested in real combat. Tomiki-ryu is characterized by using Kata (prearranged forms) in teaching and by holding competitions, both empty handed and with a rubber knife.
