Blessed Cyprian Michael Iwene Tansi was a Trappist priest from Nigeria who was beatified by Pope John Paul II on March 22, 1998. Blessed Cyprian was born in Western Nigeria in Igboezunu in September 1903 and died January 20, 1964 in England.

St. Charles Lwanga and companions are a group of young men and teenage boys who died for the faith in what was then Buganda, between 1885 and 1887. But the first Christian martyr in these years was an Anglican bishop, and besides the 22 who are canonized Catholic saints, there are 23 known Protestant martyrs of Uganda who also suffered in this persecution.
