The Nineteenth Century saw a great change in the Catholic Church's fortune in the United Kingdom. At the start of the century it still suffered severe legal handicaps, while by the end it was fully tolerated. In that time it saw Catholic Emancipation (1829), the re-establishment of the English Hierarchy (1851) and a growth in intellectual credibility known popularly as the "second spring".
