Top: Society: Religion_and_Spirituality: Christianity: Bible: History: Transmission

This category is for sites about how the collection of ancient books that we now call the Bible came into existence, the literary and oral sources that may underlay these documents, and the means by which these documents were preserved and copied over many centuries. At this level will be sites which survey the fields of oral and written transmission, the development of alphabets and writing materials, the history of writing in the form of manuscripts, and the history of the printing of the Bible.

Manuscripts

This category is for sites on the writing and copying of the Bible or portions of the Bible by hand. Like all documents produced before the invention of the printing press copying was done by hand. The materials used (papyrus, leather, and eventually paper) and the rules for writing may also appear here as well as discussion of significant manuscripts.

Oral Traditions

This category will include sites on the oral tradition which preceded the writings of both the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Printed Editions

The invention of the movable type printing press enabled books to be mass produced rather than copied by hand. This category will include sites on the history of Bible produced this way beginning with the Gutenberg Bible.
