Top: Society: Issues: Environment: Nuclear

Issues surrounding all aspects of the nuclear industry and materials in the environment. These include nuclear fallout from nuclear facilities or weapons tests, issues around nuclear power, uranium mining, recycling and waste disposal.

Topics covered elsewhere would be the technology of nuclear power and military use of nuclear materials.

Activism

Protests against nuclear weapons and nuclear energy. Sites are listed as individuals or organizations. Activism include letter writing, political lobbying, media events and civil disobediance.

Energy

Nuclear energy issues concern the many problems of nuclear energy versus other energy choices. Some of these problems are high condtruction costs, risks of meltdown, accidents, health risks, waste storage and liability. The current energy market does not reflect these costs and risks in energy sales.

Nuclear Fallout

Release of radioactivity to biosphere and related human exposure from weapons test, nuclear reactor and facility operation, accidents and other human activity.

Radioactive Contamination in Scrap Material

The recycling of scrap material contaminated with radioactivity is an issue. These materials contain traces of radioactivity. The recycled metal will cause additional exposure of the public to radiation. Significant quantities of comtaminated metal like steel and nickel are available including depleted uranium.

Radioactive Power Sources in Space

The use of hazardous nuclear technology in space missions has risks. These missions could crash or have a nuclear reactor problem of which the consequences could be catastophic.

Uranium Mining and Milling

Concerns the issues of uranium mining and milling throughout the world. The effects on the local environment and population in the long term for all phases of the mining activity. Concerns and issues to society from this first phase of the nuclear industry cycle.

Waste

Nuclear waste is an issue for the nuclear industry. Some of these materials are highly radiactive and require cooling and careful storage to avoid meltdowns and radioactive releases. No facilities exist for the long term storage of waste. Nuclear waste is an unfunded problem to future generations.
