A brief outline of the differences between the AR and AW movements:

Welfare organizations concern themselves with the welfare, and humane treatment of animals that are affected by human needs, and generally focus on domestic animals. The welfarist accepts certain traditional attitudes that dictate that we as humans *own* animals, and so believe we should be responsible owners.

The Rights movement, on the other hand, argues that we do not have the right to own or enslave animals, and work towards abolition, or animal liberation.

There was the welfarist: 'We must treat our slaves with great kindness and compassion.'
'Nonsense!', said the Abolitionists; 'we must liberate them! Even if their lives might sometimes become even harder, we must recognize that the entire institution is utterly immoral and must be abolished.' -Dietrich von Haugwitz
