Sites submitted to this category should pertain to surname etymology. Etymology is defined as the derivation and development of a word in form and meaning. Surname etymology is the study of ethnic origins and/or the meaning behind a last name. This may or may not include application of the name and/or heraldry. Only on-line, searchable reference sites which feature multiple names in dictionary format will be accepted here.

Sites which pertain to a single surname or variations of should be submitted to the applicable alphacat under Society: Genealogy: Surnames. On-line dictionary sites that do not pertain to surnames and/or genealogy should be listed at Reference: Dictionaries.

You can assist in keeping this category useful for genealogists, researchers and family members by observing these simple guidelines:

Website : only submit once (select Update URL if previously listed)
Do not abbreviate unnecessarily.

Title : state the name of the website (ignore terms such as The, My or Our)
Do not add the terms Genealogy, Personal, Homepage or Website.
Do not type in capitals or use symbols.

Description : enter a valid site description (describe content)
Do not reiterate title or category heading.
Do not exceed 30 words.
Do not include HTML or a list of keywords.
Do not use the same word repeatedly or phrases and punctuation that tend to sell the site as opposed to describe. These includes words such as best, brilliant and awesome!

Acceptable Descriptions

Example 1: Indexed reference listing the origins and heraldry of last names from around the world.
Example 2: Evolution of last names in an easy search format, including applicable coats of arms and global demographics.
