The Teddy Bear is named after the late U.S. President, Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. Cartoons of the early 1900's associated the President with the bear, and before long, the "Teddy" bear was born. Bears have become favorite toys and are highly collectible and sought after as gifts.

The Boyds Collection Ltd. began as an antiques shop in the home of Gary M. Lowenthal and his partner, now wife, Justina (Tina) Unger. A group of 100% Merino Wool Bears from China was added in 1984, and at that time Gary (G.M.) designed his own 12" fully jointed wool bear and also turned to resin sculpting. The success of the Merino Wool Bears caused him to license the rights to a design that incorporated poseable characteristics with a plush body. From that idea, the company was formed.

Winnie the Pooh was the favorite teddy bear of an English boy, Christopher Milne. Christopher's father, A. A. Milne, was a famous author and made the bear the main character in two children's books that he wrote entitled "Winnie the Pooh" written in 1926 and "The House at Pooh Corner" written in 1928. Pooh Bear has a love of honey and often creates little tunes or hums about almost anything. He lives happily with his friends in the 100 Acre Woods.
