Ashtabula River

Collapse of steel rail bridge over the Ashtabula River in Ohio on 29 December 1876. The bridge failure was caused by design flaws - the truss members merely rested upon each other instead of being bolted together.

Firth of Tay

Collapse of steel rail bridge over Firth of Tay (Scotland) in 1879, owing to miscalculations and strong winds.

Scour is the erosion of waterway soils and sediment that support bridge foundations. Soil is loosened from bridge supports and abutments that fortify each end of the bridge. One of the biggest causes of bridge failure, next to human failure, is scour.

Tacoma Narrows

The Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge (Galloping Gertie) collapsed four months after its opening in 1940.
