Missions to observe the sun.

Genesis

A NASA mission scheduled to launch in mid-2001 and collect solar wind for three years before returning to Earth.

RHESSI

The Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) program mission launched on February 5, 2002 to study the basic physics of particle acceleration and explosive energy release in solar flares. The HESSI spacecraft was renamed after launch in honor of one of the co-investigators who passed away in 2001.

SOHO

The SOHO (Solar & Heliospheric Observatory) project is being carried out by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as a cooperative effort between the two agencies. SOHO was launched on December 2, 1995 to provide an uninterrupted view of the sun for at least 15 years.

Solar Dynamics Observatory

Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) will launch in 2008 and will study and help us understand the source of the Sun's energy, the solar interior, as well as the many manifestations of the storage and release of energy in the Sun's atmospheric layers. SDO will provide us with the tools and scientific understanding that will enable us to improve the quality of forecasts of solar activity.

TRACE

The Transition Region and Coronal Explorer is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) mission launched in 1998 to image the solar corona and transition region at high angular and temporal resolution.

Ulysses

Launched in 1990, NASA's Ulysses is the first spacecraft to reach the poles of the Sun and explore the interplanetary medium at high solar latitudes.
