Psychometrics is the branch of psychology (or statistics) which is concerned with the mathematical and statistical theory of test construction and test use. Literally "measurement of the soul", psychometrics is concerned with mental measurement, often (but not invariably) through the use of questionnaires and tests. Questionnaires involve onself or another person reporting behaviour (e.g., 'I feel nervous alone in the dark' as part of a test of anxiety) whilst tests require the behaviour to be demonstrated (e.g., the meaning of 'prescient' is (a) anticipating the future, (b) hairy, (c) bog-like).

Information on Tests and Testing

This category is likely to be browsed by students, those interested in tests, those seeking information about tests and their use, and other non-specialists. Technical psychometric links should be submitted to Science: Social Sciences: Psychology: Tests and Surveys: Psychometrics: Statistical and Psychometric Resources. Details of tests or testing services (e.g., test scoring) should be submitted to Science: Social Sciences: Psychology: Tests and Surveys: Psychometrics: Testing Resources.
Psychological tests are used to assess personality, moods, cognitive (thinking) abilities, motivation, interests and similar things. they are useful in applied psychology (e.g., personnel selection; educational assessment) and scores on tests are very often used as 'operational definitions' of abstract concepts (e.g., 'extroversion', 'depression') in psychology experiments.
