The ISO 9000 series, published in 1987, outlines the requirements for the quality system of an organization. It is a set of generic standards that provide quality assurance requirements and quality management guidance.

Near the end of the year 2000 a new and improved ISO 9000 Standard was officially published. When published, the ISO 9000:2000 replaced the ISO 9000:1994 standard. However, organizations may still receive certification to the ISO 9000:1994 standard for a period of 3 years.
