Top: Science: Earth_Sciences: Paleontology: By_Geological_Interval

Any website dealing with life in the Mesozoic may be submitted to this category, but websites dealing with specific fossil Mesozoic taxa should be submitted to the appropriate vertebrate, invertebrate, plant, or microfossil category instead. Websites about specific fossil localties should be submitted to the appropriate category in:

The study of paleontology can be broken down in a number of ways. One way to study past life is to examine specific intervals of the earth's past. This category is for any website that deals with the study of these intervals.

Cenozoic

The Cenozoic is the age of "New Life" - the age of the mammals. It began at the end of the Cretaceous with the great Cretaceous/Tertiary mass extinction, and continues until the present day. This category is for any website dealing with the study Cenozoic life as preserved in the fossil record.

Mesozoic

Any website dealing with life in the Mesozoic may be submitted to this category, but websites dealing with specific fossil Mesozoic taxa should be submitted to the appropriate vertebrate, invertebrate, plant, or microfossil category instead. Websites about specific fossil localities should be submitted to the appropriate category in:

Science/Earth_Sciences/Paleontology/Regional

The Mesozoic, or "Middle Life", Era is commonly called the Age of Dinosaurs. It began with the catastrophic Permian/Triassic mass extinction, and was truncated by the Cretaceous/Tertiary mass extinction, and is composed of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods.

This category is for any website dealing with the fossil record of the Mesozoic.

Paleozoic

Submissions for this category should relate to the animal and plant life of the Paleozoic Era. Of particular utility would be sites dealing with aspects of Paleozoic paleontology that are not currently well covered in the category.

Sites that deal specifically with individual periods of the Paleozoic (ie: Devonian) should be submitted to that category:

Science/Earth_Sciences/Paleontology/By_Geological_Interval/Paleozoic/Devonian/

Sites relating to the tectonics, stratigraphy, geography, climate or other aspects of the era may be added to in order to provide a more complete view of Paleozoic Earth. However, most of these sites would be better submitted to another category such as:

Science/Earth_Sciences/ Paleogeography_and_Paleoclimatology

Science/Earth Sciences/Geology/ Tectonics

The Paleozoic, or "Old Life", Era is sometimes called the "Age of Fishes." It began with the Cambrian Explosion, a short period of time in which an enormous diversification of complex life occurred, and ended with the great Permian/Triassic mass extinction. It is composed of the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous (Mississippian and Pennsylvanian in North America), and Permian Periods.

This category is for any website dealing with the Paleozoic fossil record.

Proterozoic

The Proterozoic, or the Age of First Life, encompasses most of the history of earth, from the time of the oldest preserved fossils to the Cambrian explosion. In general, the fossil organisms are less complex than those found later in life, and the preserved ecosystems are also simpler than later life assemblages.

Such economically important deposits as the various Banded Iron formations, and biologically important deposits as the first stromatolites, are Proterozoic in age.
