The genus Mespilus currently contains the medlar, a fruiting plant commonly cultivated in medieval Europe but now relatively rare. It may also contain Stern's medlar, an extremely rare plant native to a single plot in Arkansas discovered in 1996. The allocation of Stern's medlar to the genus is controversial.
