The genus Platanus L. contains around 8 species of trees, in the north temperate regions, and extending south to Indochina. Common names in English are plane, sycamore, in other languages platane, chenar.
Platanus x acerifolia, is commonly called the London plane, and is probably a hybrid between the Oriental and American planes.
This species is native to eastern United States, and is called the sycamore in North America, also sometimes called the western, American, or Occidental plane.
