Bacteria have traditionally been identified and classified by shape, on the basis of their biochemistry, and/or the conditions under which they grow. New approaches allow classification on the basis of similarities among DNA sequences.

Actinobacteria

Group of gram-positive bacteria.

Bacteroidetes

Phylum of bacteria that are widely distributed in the environment, including in soil, in sediments, sea water and in the guts of animals.

Fibrobacteres

Fibrobacteres is a small bacterial phylum which includes many of the major rumen bacteria, allowing for the degradation of plant-based cellulose in ruminant animals.

Firmicutes

Phylum of bacteria.

Proteobacteria

Bacteria included in this Phylum.

Spirochaetes

Group of bacteria typified by their spiral structure.
