Classification of the Elephant family
Mammalia; Eutheria; Proboscidea; Elephantidae

There are two species: Loxodonta africana (African Elephant) and Elephas maximus (Asian Elephant). Two extinct taxa are recognized: Mammut americanum (Mastodon) and Mammuthus primigenius (Mammoth).

Classification of the Asian Elephant Elephas maximus
Mammalia; Eutheria; Proboscidea; Elephantidae; Elephas

There are three recognized sub-species: Elephas maximus indicus (Indian Elephant), Elephas maximus maximus (Sri Lankan Elephant) and Elephas maximus sumatranus (Sumatran Elephant).

There are two sub-species or species: Loxodonta (africana) africana (Savanna Elephant) and Loxodonta (africana) cyclotis (Forest Elephant).
