Natchez is one of the most historic places in America. It is the oldest continuous settlement on the Mississippi River, occupied by the Natchez Indians since the 12th century. The Natchez were the only remaining mound-building culture in North America when the French arrived in the 1690's. The formal establishment of the French colony was in 1716 (two years before New Orleans). This settlement was the terminus of the famed Natchez Trace. Emerald Mound, the second largest Indian mound in North America and the Grand Village of the Natchez are popular visit sites.

Under subsequent European and American domination this area became the commercial, social, and cultural center of a cotton wealthy area of thousands of square miles. More than 500 antebellum (pre Civil War) buildings still remain in and around the tiny 6x5 block original town.

Natchez has a population of about 18,000 but the amenities of a much larger city because it is a major tourist destination. The appeal of its genuine beauty and meticulous preservation is one of its major assets.

Tourism, agriculture, forestry products, and retail sales are the major industries. It has a Community College and a campus of Alcorn State University.
