Canton [Hartford County] Connecticut was incorporated from Simsbury, May, 1806. The name Canton was suggested by the late Ephraim Mills, derived from a likeness to a Swiss canton. Original name, "Suffrage."Area, 25.0 sq. miles. Population, est., 8,115. Voting districts, 1. Principal industries, manufacture of chemicals, wrought iron, brass, electro magnetic clutches and brakes, moment of inertia measuring instruments, art galleries, antique shops.
Canton includes the villages of Canton Center, Collinsville, and North Canton.
