There are eight islands in the Channel Islands: Anacapa, San Clemente, San Miguel, San Nicolas, Santa Barbara, Santa Catalina, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa. Five of them (Anacapa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa) are part of the Channel Islands National Park. Two others, San Clemente and San Nicolas, are owned by the US Navy. San Clemente is accessible to civilian groups; San Nicolas is not.
Santa Catalina Island is the only one of the eight Channel Islands with a permanent civilian population. It is a part of Los Angeles county and its two cities are Avalon and Two Harbors. It lies about 25 to 30 miles west of Newport Beach and Dana Point.
