Rancho Santa Fe got its name from the Santa Fe Railroad. When the railroad first came to San Diego, it brought with it a need for thousands of wooden railroad ties. Hoping to supply this need, the Railroad bought land here and planted eucalyptus trees, trees that grow well in arid conditions. Unfortunately, eucalyptus wood split so easily that it was unsuitable for railroad ties. What was intended to be a source of wood was turned into a community of exclusive residential estates.
According to the 2000 census, the Rancho Santa Fe ZIP codes, 92067 and 92091, contain approximately 8700 residents. This figure includes, however, both Rancho Santa Fe and some nearby areas such as Fairbanks Ranch.
