Eagle Mountain

Eagle Mountain, once a prosperous mining town, is now a ghost town with rows of mostly empty houses and abandoned schools and stores. Unlike most ghost towns, Eagle Mountain still has a firehouse that is staffed with two firefighters for both structural and wildland fires.

Eagle Mountain is now the home of a privately run prison, and may become the site of a large landfill.

Eagle Rock

It is believed that early day Indians living in the area and coming upon a distinctive sandstone rock formation, very fittingly bestowed the title of the "Eagle Rock", which in actual fact does bear a striking resemblance to the head and wings of an eagle in flight.

Eagleville

Bald eagles, which gave the town its name, can still be seen each spring throughout the valley. The community was once an important stage stop on the road north from Reno.

Earlimart

Earlimart is an unincorporated rural town that is located approximately forty miles north of the City of Bakersfield, CA and approximately seventy miles south of Fresno, CA.

Earp

Bearing the name of the frontiersman, lawman, gambler, and prospector, the city of Earp is the names sake of the famed Wyatt Earp.

East Los Angeles

East Los Angeles (also affectionately known as "East Los") is a large unincorporated area to the immediate east of downtown L.A. It's an easy commute to downtown, which is about four miles away. Buses, Metrolink commute rail and four freeways make for good transportation options. The area is both hilly and flat. Population (current year estimated for East Los Angeles CDP) is 131,255. Estimated number of households for the same period is 29,896.

This community is attractive to immigrants for its affordability and sense of community. East Los Angeles features some of the oldest houses in the Los Angeles area. Over one-third of the houses are owner occupied. The homes in the northern section are located in the hills; the rest of East Los Angeles is generally flat.

East Nicolaus

East Nicolas is a small unincorporated area of Sutter County.

East Palo Alto

For most of its history, East Palo Alto was part of unincorporated San Mateo County. As such, it did not have an official boundary until it incorporated in 1983. However, the area historically regarded as East Palo Alto was much larger than the city's current 2.5 square miles. Large tracts were annexed by Menlo Park and Palo Alto from the late 1940s to the early 1960s.

The original inhabitants were Ohlone/ Costanoan Native Americans. Spanish ranchers took over, followed by Caucasian speculators and settlers. For a time Chinese laborers were prevalent. Asian and Italian flower growers preceded the flood of middle-class Caucasians drawn to post-war housing developments. East Palo Alto later became the largest African American community on the peninsula. Today the city possesses a multi-ethnic population which includes a large number of Hispanics and Pacific Islanders.

Easton

Easton is a small unincorporated community of approximately 2,000 people, adjacent to Fresno, CA.

Edgewood

Edgewood is a small ranching community in Northern California at the base of Mt. Shasta.

Edison

Edison is a rural area located in the San Joaquin Valley. Surrounding farms grow a variety of crops, including potatoes, oranges, grapefruit, and bell peppers.

Edwards

Edwards Air Force Base occupies territory once explored by Spanish colonists and settled by pioneer homesteaders. The military base began as a stark and remote bombing range in 1933 and went on to become a major bomber training base in World War II. The Air Force Flight Test Center originated during the darkest days of the war, and has since achieved more major milestones in flight than anywhere else in the world.

El Cajon

El Cajon is a commercial and residential city 15 miles east of downtown San Diego. In Spanish, the name means "box" or "box-like canyon," and reflects the topography of the area.

According to the 2000 census, the El Cajon ZIP codes, 92019 and 92021, contain approximately 158,000 residents. This figure includes, however, not only El Cajon, but also nearby unincorporated areas in the County.

El Centro

El Centro is 15 minutes from international industrial complexes in Mexicali, Baja California. There are two international border crossings nearby for commercial and noncommercial vehicles. Fifty percent of the jobs in El Centro come from the service and retail sector.

El Centro is also the winter home of the Navy Blue Angels.

El Cerrito

El Cerrito is located just across the bay from San Francisco, and the hilly areas of El Cerrito provide spectacular views of its famous neighbor. El Cerrito is a well-educated community, with 70 percent of people 25 and over having attended college.

The city was formerly called Rust, after one of its founders. In 1917, it was incorporated, and the named changed to El Cerrito, which is Spanish for "Little Hill".

El Dorado

Originally known as Mud Springs, El Dorado was once the center of a large quartz-mining district.

El Macero

El Macero is an unincorporated area adjacent to the city of Davis, CA. Primarily a golf club community, El Macero also houses the New Zealand Consulate's Sacramento office.

El Monte

El Monte ("wooded place"), first explored by Spanish soldiers and missionaries in the late 18th century, was named for its dense growths of slender willows, alders, and cattails.

Today it is an urban community of homes and schools, supported by a strong industrial/commercial base.

El Nido

El Nido is located in Merced County, about 12 miles south of Merced at the crossroads of state route 59 and El Nido Road. It is primarily an agricultural community, with its two main crops being cotton and alfalfa.

El Portal

Located at the east entrance to Yosemite, El Portal provides services and goods to Yosemite visitors.

El Segundo

Located in the South Bay of Los Angeles County, El Segundo is a small city on the coast with beautiful beaches, a large industrial base, and a nice hometown feeling. It is adjacent to Los Angeles International Airport and hosts corporate headquarters for companies like Mattel, Aerospace Corporation, Hughes Electronics and DIRECTV.

Elizabeth Lake

Elk

The region around Elk was home to some of the first non-native settlers along the Mendocino coast.

In the early 1850s, trappers and hunters moved into the region to supply the various mills and logging camps with venison, elk, and bear. Ranches, farms, and small mills were established nearby. Then, in 1883, a local entreprenuer, Lorenzo White, purchased most of the land around Elk, established a large mill, and built a railroad to support it.

The Coast Highway, which runs through the center of town, is lined with shops, inns, and restaurants. Greenwood State Beach has short hiking trails leading to tide pools and grand vistas, and its Visitor Center features a small museum of local history.

Elk Creek

Home of Valley View State Prison and the Grindstone Rancheria of Wintun-Wailaki Indians, Elk Creek is largely comprised of ranches.

Elk Grove

"Elk abundant here" are among the earliest words written about Elk Grove. These words were written by Spanish explorers in 1807, who decided the area was too wet and marshy to start a mission on, and went elsewhere.

On July 1, 2000, Elk Grove became the California's first new city of the millennium.

Elmira

Elmira is a small unincorporated area adjacent to the city of Vacaville.

Elverta

Elverta is an rural unincorporated area approximately 10 miles north of Sacramento, CA.

Emeryville

Emeryville is located between Oakland and Berkeley, across the San Francisco Bay from San Francisco, and is not only a high-tech center but also an emerging destination for entertainment and culture. Encompanssing 1.2 square miles, Emeryville has a population of 7,000, but is host to 40,000 workers.

Emigrant Gap

Situated in the scenic Sierra Nevada Mountains, Emigrant Gap is primarily known as a portion of the Overland Emigrant Trail. At this point, even after the Gold Rush, covered wagons were lowered by rope over the cliff to the floor of Bear Valley. This was one of the most dangerous parts of the trip.

Empire

Empire is a small unincorporated area adjacent to the city of Modesto.

Encinitas

Encinitas got its start as a coastal town in the 1880's. Today it is an incorporated city, 20 miles north of San Diego, and includes the neighborhoods of Cardiff (sometimes called Cardiff-by-the-Sea), Leucadia, and Olivenhain. The city's name comes from the Spanish, and refers to the small oak trees that grow in the area. Its population, according to the 2000 census, is approximately 57,000.

Encino

The community of Encino (Spanish for "oak tree") is located in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, only 25 minutes from Los Angeles. Encino's business district lies mostly along Ventura Boulevard.

Escalon

The city of Escalon was incorporated on March 12, 1957, and has a current population of approximately 5,300. Escalon covers 1.78 square miles and is surrounded by almond orchards and dairy farms.

Escondido

The city of Escondido dates from the 1880's, when a rancho was subdivided for small farms, citrus groves, vineyards, and a town. The name means "hidden" in Spanish, and refers to the then-secluded location of the new development. Apparently the promoters considered it poor public relations to retain the name of the former rancho. That name, for some unexplained reason, was El Rincon del Diablo ("Nook of the Devil"). The population of the city is approximately 134,000.

Esparto

Esparto, referred to as "the gateway to the Capay Valley", is approximately 34 miles northwest of Sacramento, CA. With a population of 1,500, Esparto is mainly a farming community.

Essex

Situated in the heart of the Mojave Desert, Essex is primarily known for its proximity to Mitchell Caverns State Natural Preserve.

Etna

The town of Etna, incorporated in 1904, was first called Rough & Ready in its early Gold Rush days. Later, when it was the primary supply depot for many of the mines in the area, it was called Aetna Mills. Located in the Scott Valley, Etna has a population of approximately 850 people, and sits at the trailhead of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Eureka

Eureka sits in the middle of Humboldt county, adjacent to Humboldt Bay, which is home to 60 per cent of California's oyster industry. The city is decorated with century-old Victorian architecture and has quite a history as a fishing and mill town. Eureka is probably most famous for being declared America's "Best Small Art Town" by travel writer John Villani.

Exeter

Exeter is a small farming community in the heart of the San Joaquin valley. Exeter is located 30 minutes from the entrance to Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks, Mt Whitney, and Kings Canyon, the deepest canyon in North America.
