1   Provinces and Territories
Canada is subdivided into ten provinces and three territories:

2   National Regions
Canada's provinces and territories are also organized into geographical regions.

Sites that are sent to these categories should cover more than one province within that category. A business in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, for example, could be submitted tot he Atlantic Region. However, a business a location in Nova Scotia only should be sent to the appropriate category in Nova Scotia.

2.1   Atlantic Region
2.2   Central Region
2.3   Northern Region
The Northern Region is comprised of the northern portions of all provinces and territories save Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. It is roughly equivalent to the 55th parallel, but dips south to include all of Labrador and extends north to the North Pole. This line is NOT definitive, but an indicator only. This category is intended for sites that have a northern focus or that have a business footprint in the north, or that have websites throughout the north.

2.4   Western Region
The Western Region is comprised of the provinces of British Columbia and and the three prairie provinces in Prairies Region.

This category is intended for sites that address issues concerning these provinces and regional businesses that have a region-wide footprint or web sites in more than one province, one of them being British Columbia.

2.4.1   Prairies Region
3   Provincial Regions
Each province is comprised of non-administrative regions, which include all the province's locality and, where applicable, counties and districts.

Some province also contain specific regions such as Metro Areas and (Offshore) Islands.

3.1   (Offshore) Islands
The provinces of British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador maintain categories for offshore islands, which serve the same functions as Regions, defined at http://dmoz.org/regionaltaxonomy.html#Model2. Localities on offshore islands will always be listed under Province/Localities and an @link will be placed in the offshore island category.

At times islands comprise Counties, Districts or Regions of their own, depending on their size and population. Examples are: Regional/North_America/Canada/Ontario/Counties_and_Districts/Manitoulin/ , Regional/North_America/Canada/British_Columbia/Regions/Vancouver_Island/, or Regional/North_America/Canada/Nova_Scotia/Regions/Cape_Breton/.

Most small, freshwater islands are listed as localities.

3.2   Metro Areas
Currently, each province except Prince Edward Island has a Metro Areas category. These categories cover geographical areas based on Statistics Canada description of Census Metropolitan Areas. These should not be confused with the Census Agglomeration Areas, which are smaller.
4   Counties and Districts
This category is the next-highest administrative area following the provinces and territories. Some provinces (such as British Columbia) do not have counties, and may have Regional Districts or some other specific category.
5   Localities
Localities categories include, but are not limited to, the following types of populated places or areas with clustered or scattered buildings and a permanent human population: incorporated communities, cities, towns, villages, townships, hamlets, settlements, districts, reservations, and unincorporated places regardless of next higher administrative area.
