There are hundreds of parks in Ontario, ranging from the huge Algonquin Provincial Park to small municipal parks. Parks have many different purposes including nature preservation, education, historical preservation, and recreation.

Conservation Areas

Conservation Authorities, created in 1946 by an Act of the Provincial Legislature, are mandated to ensure the conservation, restoration and responsible management of Ontario's water, land and natural habitats through programs that balance human, environmental and economic needs.

Conservation Authorities develop and deliver programs to ensure the healthy coexistence between the community and it's environment. Though the lands they manage and own, as well as the educational programs they deliver, Conservation Authorities provide opportunities for our citizens to understand the value of their natural environment and the economic and social benefits of protecting that environment. For over 50 years, Conservation Authorities have worked in cooperation with local communities to ensure easy and appropriate access to Ontario's greenspace for tourism and recreation. They mobilize and work with communities to ensure that their voices are heard in government decision-making on local environmental issues.

National Historic Sites

Parks Canada is responsible for Canada's program of historical commemoration, which recognizes nationally significant places, persons, and events. Many historical places are restored and made available to the public as National Historic Sites.

National Parks

National Parks are a country-wide system of representative natural areas of Canadian significance. By law, they are protected for public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment, while being maintained in an unimpaired state for future generations. National Parks have existed in Canada for well over a century. There are currently 39 national parks and national park reserves in Canada. Six of these are in Ontario.

The Ontario Government operates a large network of provincial parks. The goal of Ontario Parks is to ensure that Ontario's provincial parks protect significant natural, cultural, and recreational environments, while providing ample opportunities for visitors to participate in recreational activities.

There are six classes of parks: Recreation, Historical, Natural Environment, Nature Reserve, Waterway, and Wilderness.
