When New Brunswick was established in 1784 it was divided into eight counties. As the population grew, the original counties were divided and new counties set up; the final complement is 15. These counties are subdivided into civil parishes similar to American townships.

Albert

Albert County is located in southeastern New Brunswick, bounded by Saint John and Westmorland Counties and the Bay of Fundy. It was set off from Westmorland County in 1845.

Carleton County is located in western New Brunswick, bounded by Victoria and York Counties and the State of Maine. It was set off from York County in 1831.

Charlotte County is one of the original counties established in 1785. It is located in southwestern New Brunswick. To the south lies the Bay of Fundy; to the west, the State of Maine. It is bounded on the north and east by the counties of York, Sunbury, Queens, Kings, and Saint John.

Gloucester County was set off from Northumberland County in 1826. It is located in the northeastern corner of New Brunswick; bounded on the north by the Bay of Chaleur, on the east by the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the west by Restigouche County and on the south by Northumberland County.

Kent County was set off from Northumberland County in 1826. It is bounded on the east by Northumberland Strait and on the south by the Counties of Westmorland and Queens. On the north and west it is bounded by Northumberland County.

Madawaska

Madawaska County was set off from Victoria County in 1873. Before that it was part of York and then Carleton Counties. Madawaska County is located in the northwestern corner of New Brunswick. To the north lies Restigouche County; to the east, Victoria County; to the south, the state of Maine; and to the west, the Province of Quebec.

Located in east central New Brunswick, Northumberland County was one of the original eight counties. It is bounded on the north by Gloucester and Restigouche Counties, on the south by York and Sunbury Counties, on the west by Victoria County and on the east by Kent County and Northumberland Strait.

Queens

As one of the original counties created in 1785, Queens County is located in central New Brunswick and straddles the Saint John River Valley. It is bounded on the north by Kent County, on the east by Westmorland, and enclosed from the southeast to the west by Kings, Charlotte County.

Located in northern New Brunswick, Restigouche County is bounded on the north by the Bay of Chaleur and the province of Quebec, on the west by the Province of Quebec, on the south by the counties of Madawaska, Victoria, and Northumberland and on the east by Gloucester County from which it was created in 1837.

St. John

Saint John County is located in the southeastern part of the Province. To the north lies Kings County and to the south is the Bay of Fundy. On the west is Charlotte County. The City of Saint John received its charter in 1785.

Sunbury County is located in central New Brunswick along the Saint John River. To the north lies Northumberland County and to the south is Charlotte County. On the west is York County and on the east lies Queens County. The Parish of Burton was set up in 1786 and included part of Blissville until 1834. Lincoln was erected in 1786 and included part of Blissville until 1834.

Victoria

Victoria County was created from Carleton County in 1844. It is bounded on the north by Restigouche County; on the east by Northumberland and York; on the south by Carleton County; and on the west by Madawaska County and the State of Maine.

Westmorland

York
