The province of British Columbia is divided into exactly twenty-eight regional districts. Each regional district is a federation of its component municipalities and electoral areas. Initially enabled by the Municipal Act of 1965, the regional districts have three basic roles:
- Act as a regional government over issues affecting the entire region, particularly in the area of service delivery
- Provide administrative framework for economic or service partnerships between two or more municipalities or areas, and
- In the absence of incorporated municipalities, the regional district acts as the "local" government for rural areas.
Regional districts in British Columbia are somewhat analogous to counties in the United Kingdom or the United States, or departments in France.
Fraser Valley is located in the lower southwestern corner of British Columbia. It stretches from Hope, in the northeast, to just east and south of Vancouver, following the Fraser River.
The Greater Vancouver Regional District is located in the southwest corner of mainland British Columbia. It is bordered by the Fraser Valley Regional District on the east; the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District on the north; the Sunshine Coast Regional District on the northwest; the Strait of Georgia on the west; and Washington's Whatcom County on the south. Total area: 3292 square kilometers. The largely urban district is comprised of 15 principal cities - Burnaby, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, North Vancouver, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Richmond, Surrey, Vancouver, West Vancouver, and White Rock - as well as surrounding villages, islands, and districts, including Anmore, Belcarra, and Bowen Island. It is the most populous regional district with approximately 1.9 million people (1996), roughly half of the province's population.
British Columbia's Sunshine Coast is a world of beaches, bays, islands and fjords overlooked by Coast Mountains. It stretches along the Strait of Georgia from Howe Sound to Jervis Inlet. It is made up of many small towns and cities, including Egmont, Garden Bay, Gibsons (Gibson's Landing), Halfmoon Bay, Langdale, Madeira Park, Pender Harbour, Roberts Creek, Savary Island, Sechelt, and Secret Cove.
