Located on Vancouver Island, Victoria is the capital of British Columbia with a population of 73,504 (1996 census). It is the cultural and business centre of the Greater Victoria region (population approx. 325,000).

Victoria is Western Canada's oldest city, beginning in 1843 as a Hudson's Bay Company trading post and named in honour of Queen Victoria of England.
