Jenner, Edward

Edward Jenner (1749-1823) English physician and naturalist; pioneer of vaccination.

Vicar's son from Berkeley, Gloucestershire. After studying cowpox in countrypeople, Jenner conducted experiments that lead to the creation of the smallpox vaccine.

Wallis, Sir Barnes Neville

Sir Barnes Wallis - (1887 - 1979), English aeronautical engineer and inventor.

Designed the R100 airship, then became chief designer at Vickers, Weybridge, where he designed the Wellesley and Wellington bombers, with their revolutionary geodetic fuselarge structure.

Designed the 'bouncing bomb' used by the British in WWII to destroy the great dams of the Ruhr area of Germany - the Möhne, Sorpe, Eder and others.

Later developed the swing wing Tornado aircraft.

Knighted in 1968.
