A popular tourist centre, with strong religious and historical connections. Popular areas are Canterbury Cathedral, The University of Kent, St. Augustines Abbey and Kent County Cricket Ground.

Chatham

The Medway Towns has a wealth of historical sites. The City of Rochester is dominated by the Norman Castle and Cathedral. Many of the local buildings are featured in Charles Dickens novels as it was here that he chose to make home until his death at nearby Gads Hill in 1870.

Chatham has a delicate mix of modern and ancient architecture. Alongside one of the finest shopping areas in the region is the Napoleonic Fort Amherst, World Naval Base and the Theatre Royal.

Medway is located in North Kent and can be easily reached from most parts of South East England. As well as having a wealth of history to be explored, it is just 30 miles from London and 40 miles from the cross channel services. The M2, M20 and M25 motorways are all close to hand. The Medway Towns are well served by Rail services from London and there are regular coach services to and from London, Victoria.

A civic parish of Canterbury, supposedly unique. Originally created in 1894.

The Parish boundary runs along the centre of the A2 by-pass, crosses Hollow Lane to the Canterbury to London railway-line, and then runs south, of the line to the A28, after passing through Howfield Farm to the eastern side of Howfield Manor. It then runs along the bridle path through Milton Manor, Larkey Valley Wood and New House Farm until it meets Iffin Lane. From there it runs down Iffin Lane and Hollow Lane to the by-pass.

Walmer

It is said that Julius Caesar landed on Walmer beach in 55BC, but is more famous for the castle built by Henry VIII in 1540. Walmer castle is the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral the Lord Boyce GCB OBE. The post was held until her death by H.M. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Old St Mary's, Walmer was built around 1120 and if legend is correct provided a bow to Richard Coeur de Lion for the Third Crusade from one of the two yew trees in the grounds.

Today, Walmer has a Parish Council and is part of Dover District Council.
