Sellafield Reprocessing Plant

Sellafield is the controversial nuclear reprocessing plant, operated by British Nuclear Fuels, on the Cumbrian coast.

Originally the 'Windscale and Calder Works', Calder Hall was the world's first commercial nuclear power station, and Windscale was the reprocessing plant that converted the waste products of nuclear power stations to re-useable uranium (96%), plutonium for nuclear weapons (1%), and the highly radioactive but useless fission products (3%).

Radioactive discharges to the air and sea have given discomfort to various neighbouring countries especially Ireland and Norway, who are campaigning to have the plant closed.
