Cooke, Alistair

Born in 1908. Joined the BBC in 1934 as a film critic and started reporting for the BBC in l937. Has presented BBC Radio 4's Letter from America since 1946. Also has presented television programmes, hosted "Masterpiece Theatre" on American public television for 22 years, and has written many books.

Goon Show, The

The Goon Show was broadcast on BBC Radio from 1951 to 1960. It was mainly written by Spike Milligan and starred Milligan, Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe. Enormously popular, it helped pave the way for a generation of British comedy, including Monty Python.
