"Mela" is derived from a Sanskrit word for "meeting"; in the early 1980's, a few towns in the UK established small festivals - a few stalls and a procession - focussed on and for their communities of Asian origin.
Over 20 years, some of these have grown into substantial multi-cultural annual festivals of arts and culture.
