A municipality about 110 km south of the Arctic Circle. Arvidsjaur Town is the seat of local government. Sámi people have lived in the area for a very long time, and Swedish settlers started to move in in the late 16th century.
Haparanda town is located by the northernmost bight of the Gulf of Bothnia, on the western side of the Torne River which is the border with Finland. On the other side of the river lies the Finn town Tornio (or Torneå in Swedish). The Haparanda-Tornio twin towns are also known as EuroCity.

Jokkmokk Municipality is the second-largest municipality of Sweden in terms of its area which is slightly smaller than the US state of New Jersey. In 2005, the population was about 6000. The name Jokkmokk is Sámi and means "river bend".
The seat of local government is Jokkmokk Town, where a large market has taken place every year since 1605; other important townships are Vuollerim, Kåbdalis and Porjus. Large parts of the municipality are taken up by the national parks Sarek, Stora Sjöfallet and Padjelanta.

Kalix is a coastal municipality located between Luleå and Haparanda. The name derives from Kalix Älv, the large river which runs through the municipality, and which in North Sami is called Gáláseatnu.
Kiruna is the northernmost, and largest, of Sweden's municipality, covering an area larger than that of New Jersey. The local seat of government is Kiruna Town. The entire municipality is north of the Pole Circle, and so enjoys midnight sun in the summer months. The space station Esrange, used for research on the atmosphere and on the aurora borealis, is located here.
Piteå is located on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, south of Luleå.
