Chiang Mai is Thailand's second city and considered the cultural center of the northern region of the country. It is also a major gateway to the neighboring countries of Myanmar and Laos as well as to nearby hilltribes including the Karen, Hmong, Akha, Lahu, Yao and Lisu.

Founded as a training camp for elephants by the Royal Family in the early 19th century, Mae Hong Son, the City of Three Mists, is located in the northwestern region of Thailand. The province, bordering Myanmar (Burma), has the lowest population density in the Kingdom with half of the peoples belonging to ethnic hilltribes, the Karen being the largest of these groups. Architecturally, temples (wats) in Mae Hong Son province differ markedly from those elsewhere in the country due to a strong Shan (Burmese) influence.

Udon Thani (know simply as Udon) is approximately 560 km from Bangkok, the province covers an area of 15,589 sq. km., with its boundary stretching to Nong Khai in the north, Khon Kaen in the south, Sakon Nakhon in the east, and Nong Bua Lam Phu in the west. Udon Thani is situated on a plateau with mountains and forested area in the west.
