Open Directory's Society section covers the areas of human interaction and people's thoughts, speculations, and aspirations about the world they live in.

"What is a Singaporean? What's so unique about them? Why are they different from a Malaysian?" Find the answers in their food, genealogy, history, and languages. See the individual perspective in their personal homepages

Singapore's social structure can also be seen, from our community and organisations to the disabled and religion, and even the Expatriate community.

Examine Singaporeans' relationships with each other in topics such as Chats and Forums, Relationships, Sexual preferences, Issues, Politics, Women.

Closely related cats are of course those of a global nature in Society or perhaps covering Asia.

The Arts and Entertainment scene, as well as the sports arena are obvious cousins well worth looking into.

Chats and Forums

Sites listed here will be for chats and forums based in Singapore.
Chats and Forums are online communities where people meet (albeit virtually) and interact or discuss whatever may concern them.

Community

A rather nebulous term, "Community" refers to "a body of people with something in common", for example: Place of residence, Race, Religion, Hobbies, Professions and actually almost anything you care to think of.
For purposes of categorization however, we are requesting you submit only sites dealing with:

  • Location
  • Race
Other suitable categories include the Organization, Organization\Social, and Religion subcats. Thank you.
  • No category description found

    Crime

Contains websites that have issues relating to crime. Crime prevention and law enforcement are also under this category.

    Disabilities

Suitable sites for this cat include:
  • Organizations for the disabled in Singapore
  • Support groups in Singapore
  • Personal experiences/homepages of disabled Singaporeans
    Closely related categories are:
  • Conditions and Diseases for sites dealing primarily with disease conditions
  • Special education in Singapore
  • Welfare organizations for society at large
  • Commercial sites
  • Non-Singaporean sites
    Thank you.
  • Disability: Defined by the WHO in 1976 as any restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being. This is usually taken to mean physical, intellectual or sensory impairment, medical conditions or mental illness.
Here, we focus on sites dealing with the end-product (i.e. the functional staus and disability) of the individual, rather than the medical condition itself.

    Expatriate Life

For quicker placement in the directory please follow these Submission Tips:

Title: Name of Business or Organization

Description: This describes the website and should note distinguishing features found on the site without the use of hype, personal pronouns, or repetitive terms.

About foreigners working in Singapore and the various associations for expatriates.

    Food

Suitable sites for this cat include:

  • Websites dedicated to discussing food in Singapore
  • Directories of restaurants
  • Forums/discussion boards about Singaporean Food
The folllowing sites should be listed elsewhere:
  • Purely recipe sites
  • Individual restaurants/bars
  • Food wholesalers, nutritional/health supplements
  • Where food is a small section (<3 pages/20%) of the site
  • Sites pertaining to cooking and foods of Singapore.

    Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual

Only submissions offering information on Singapore will considered for this category. This may include regional guides, organizations, some events and conferences, and online communities.

Information, resources, and issues relevant to the gay, lesbian, and bisexual communities.

    Genealogy

Genealogy is the study of family histories, including specific family surnames and genealogy related to specific geographical areas. Singapore, being a uniquely immigrant nation, has a rich trove of intertwined family trees.

Submissions should be limited to sites focused on Singaporen families, although sites about common Singaporean surnames are also welcome. Personal pages, if submitted, should be about genealogy or have a detailed family tree and history. Thank you.

    Issues

Pages dealing with any issues about Singapore that are not specifically covered elsewhere can be listed here.

    Language and Linguistics

Besides the 4 official languages (English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil), there exists easily tens of other commonly spoken languages and dialects in this multi-racial island.
Sites dealing with the history, policy and promotion/campaigns can be listed here.
Language schools and non-Singaporean focused sites should be listed in the relevant related cats.

    Organizations

Please put organizations which function as support groups rather than public service groups under the "Support Groups" category.

This category lists the social and cultural organizations registered in Singapore. All non-commercial societies (except political organizations) can be submitted here. Business and for-profit sites should not be listed here.

    Personal Pages

This category contains the personal homepages and blogs of Singaporeans. Basically, the sites in this category will have personal information about the author as well as information on any interests the author might have.
As is the case for the rest of ODP, only one address for each site will be listed, and in only the most relevant category. Multiple submissions may very well result in that site being deleted.

    Politics

Please restrict links in this section to just the General Elections. The more general political matters should go to other categories.
Politics is the art of reforming a society through public policy, and a hallmark (and curse) of civilization. Most people associate it with government.
Sites regarding specific issues (political or otherwise), should be submitted to Society_and_Culture/Issues.

    Relationships

This category contains websites relating to interpersonal relationships and romance.

    Religion

We are glad to receive submissions for sites dealing with Christianity in the Singaporean context. Examples include:
  • The Christian community in Singapore
  • Church conferences held in Singapore
  • Singapore Church history
  • Churches (Appropriate subcat)
  • Para-church/Interdenominational groups (subcat)
  • Missions based/recruiting here
  • Ecumenism
Please submit non-Singaporean-only sites, commercial sites, personal pages, and opposing views to the appropiate cats elsewhere. Thank you.
  • This category contains websites that are related to religion and spiritual beliefs in Singapore.

    Women

Contains pages that have a relation to issues regarding women.
